How Texas Holiday Possession Schedules Work in 2026

|

In 2026, Thanksgiving under the Texas standard possession order belongs to the managing conservator, while the Christmas school break is divided between both parents. Court-ordered holiday terms override a conflicting regular weekend, Thursday visit, or informal family tradition.

That distinction matters when families arrange travel, holiday meals, and school-break childcare. A common source of conflict in visitation matters is planning around the usual schedule instead of the signed order.

Read the Signed Order Before Making Plans

Your signed order controls, even if it uses different wording from the standard Texas form. In Texas family law, the managing conservator is often the parent with the right to decide the child’s primary residence. The possessory conservator is the parent with scheduled periods of possession. Parents may use terms such as custodial and noncustodial parent in conversation, but the definitions in the order matter.

The statewide framework provides a common parenting-time schedule, but it doesn’t govern every case. A court can use different provisions when a child is under three or when the usual schedule isn’t in the child’s best interest. Orders can also include negotiated holiday terms, geographic restrictions, or exchange instructions that differ from the statutory default.

Before making plans, locate the sections titled possession, access, holidays, Christmas vacation, Thanksgiving, or special days. Read those provisions before relying on a calendar app, past practice, or a verbal agreement.

Thanksgiving & Christmas School Break in 2026

The statutory evening exchange time for the periods described below is 6 p.m., unless the signed order provides otherwise.

In even-numbered years, the managing conservator has Thanksgiving. The period begins on the day school dismisses for the holiday and ends the following Sunday, using the statutory evening exchange time at both ends.

Pearland ISD lists Thanksgiving break from November 23 through November 27, 2026. The calendar identifies the break, but parents shouldn’t assume an exchange date based on those dates alone. The child’s actual school schedule and the language of the order determine when possession begins.

The year-end school break is divided into two periods:

  • First period: In 2026, the possessory conservator has Christmas vacation from the evening school dismisses until noon on December 28.
  • Second period: The managing conservator has the child from noon on December 28 until the evening before school resumes.

Pearland ISD lists winter break from December 21, 2026, through January 1, 2027. Use the district calendar for planning, but follow the order’s school-dismissal and school-resumption language when determining the exchange points. Confirm those details before booking flights or arranging an out-of-town exchange.

Other Dates That Override the Usual Schedule

Thanksgiving and the year-end school break aren’t the only periods that can replace a normal weekend. Shorter special-day provisions can also determine which parent has possession.

Mother’s Day & Father’s Day
The mother has possession from 6 p.m. on the Friday before Mother’s Day until the same time on Mother’s Day. The father receives the equivalent period for Father’s Day. These periods take priority over conflicting weekend time.

The Child’s Birthday
The parent who doesn’t otherwise have possession on the child’s birthday receives time from 6 to 8 p.m. That parent picks up the child from, and returns the child to, the other conservator’s residence.

Spring Break
For parents who live 100 miles or less apart, the possessory conservator has spring break in even-numbered years and the managing conservator has it in odd-numbered years. A different distance provision or custom order can change that allocation.

Expanded Weekends Don’t Change Holiday Priority

Expanded standard possession changes regular weekend timing, not the holiday rotation. Parents living within 50 miles of each other generally receive the expanded schedule by default, extending weekend possession from school dismissal on Friday until school resumes Monday morning.

Under a regular standard possession order, the possessory conservator typically has the first, third, and fifth weekends, Thursday periods, alternating holidays, and summer possession. A holiday may fall near one of those weekends, but that doesn’t make the weekend schedule controlling.

Holiday provisions supersede conflicting Thursday and weekend periods regardless of the distance between the parents. Apply the holiday allocation first, then return to the normal schedule after that period ends.

When an Exchange Doesn’t Go As Ordered

A last-minute disagreement doesn’t automatically require an enforcement case, but a parent shouldn’t respond by withholding the child for an unrelated reason. Child support and visitation are legally separate in Texas. Unpaid support doesn’t authorize a parent to deny possession, and missed parenting time doesn’t authorize a parent to stop support payments.

Preserve practical records if an exchange is in doubt. Keep the signed order, written messages about the exchange, and a clear record of where and when you appeared for the handoff. Avoid escalating communications or creating an informal arrangement that conflicts with the order. Even a written agreement between the parents doesn’t modify the court order.

When a parent denies an enforceable period, a visitation enforcement action can ask the court to address the noncompliance. Depending on the facts, remedies can include additional parenting time, fines, and, in serious cases, jail time. If the existing schedule no longer fits the family’s circumstances, a visitation modification may be the appropriate next step.

A modification requires a material and substantial change in circumstances since the current order was entered. Relevant examples include relocation, a substantial work-schedule change, changed needs of the child, or the preference of a child age 12 or older. The facts and the child’s best interest determine whether a requested change is appropriate.

Plan Before the School Break Begins

Compare the signed order with the child’s school calendar before a holiday-week disagreement arises:

  • Identify which parent has Thanksgiving.
  • Confirm how the year-end school break is divided.
  • Check the required pickup and return locations.
  • Put the relevant exchange details in writing.

In Brazoria County, visitation modification and enforcement matters are heard through the 300th District Court in Angleton.
